Thank Heaven for Little Girls

I’m not saying I wouldn’t have done this had I had a little boy, but I definitely get less flack from Jason this way. Nothing screams Summer than some shocking neon pink toes!

Swim Lesson #2

Cady was really looking forward to her swim lesson this week. She kept saying she liked swim lessons, but she did not want to put her face under the water. I kept telling her that it’s no big deal and that she will get there.

Then, the day before she held her nose and told me that she would put goggles on, hold her nose and put her head under the water. Totally out of the blue. It was promising, but I wasn’t holding my breath

I didn’t get as many pics as I would have liked because Hadley is getting the tooth from Hell.

They started out blowing bubbles. She did great.

Then they worked on body positioning. She was swimming on the bar bell all by herself and doing a great job.

During on of these trips, they stopped and this happened.

Yes, she did go under! I was so proud.

From there they worked on getting in and out and more of the previous two skills. William bragged on her afterward. She did such a fabulous job!

Beach Babies

This past weekend we took a trip down the coast and visited some friends. They live just a very short drive from the beach so we decided to spend a day on the sand.

Cady had never been in anything but a pool, so it was a whole new experience for her. She was either going to love it or hate every second of it.

Checking it out the first time with Jason

Luckily, she LOVED it. And that could be an understatement. She may have loved it more than she has ever loved anything in her entire life.

It was windy and the water was pretty rough. Did she mind the sand or salt in her eyes? Nope. She won’t put her face in the pool, but a huge wave going over her head? Bring it on! She is a serious beach baby.

We had a pretty sweet setup. I’ve never been to a beach were you could drive on the beach and just park right on the shore. We parked the cars, set up a gazebo tent in between and parked our chairs in the shade.

How did Hadley feel about the beach?

That sums up her initial reaction. And by the way, the child owns a swimsuit, but she peed on it. So we stayed true to our hillbilly roots and just let her hang out in her diaper while it dried.

We really did have some perfect weather. It wasn’t too hot, while the wind was pretty strong, it kept things cool enough that it was pleasant.

Hadley eventually warmed up to the idea of the water after some food and a nice nap.

We loved our time on the beach!

(Yes, Hadley is eating sand…)

7 Months

Happy 7 Months Hadley Elizabeth!

That picture… we visited some friends a few hours down the coast a bit, and we took the opportunity to spend a day at the beach. Hadley was not a fan at first (in her defense, I had stripped her down b/c she peed on her swimsuit, she was hungry and it was windy and all that). She eventually got over it, but this pic was too funny not to use.

Big changes at 7 months. She finally has teeth. She woke up Saturday morning with a little tooth sticking out of her gums. And she woke up Sunday morning with the second one. Two teeth in two days. No warning either. I mean, she has been “teething” (drooling like a rabid dog and mauling everything) for a few months it seems like. But with Cady we would see a white speck under the skin to let us know there was a light at the end of the Teething Tunnel. I inspect her gums daily and there was no sign that an actual tooth was close.

She is still not crawling. She, as you know, scoots like a pro. She can also pull herself up. So I truly think that she is going to be one of those babies that never crawls. She is just going to go from scooting to walking overnight.

This weekend she also started making the “da” sound with huge regularity. I’ve tried to preempt the “dada” and I’ve been pushing “mama” but no luck.

She is still a big, growing girl. She is in size 4 diapers (I think I am buying size 5! the next time I buy a pack). She is wearing 9 and 12 months clothes (she even wears some of Cady’s 18 month stuff). She loves solid foods. So far she has liked everything we have given her. She is a huge fan of squash and zucchini. She loves her orange veggies too. I am loving making all her food for her too. I really like being able to control everything she is eating.

First Swim Lesson

We enrolled Cady in swim lessons this Summer. Her friend, Kendall, has been going to this swim school and has had a very good experience, so we decided to give it a try.

There are different skill levels and she is in the second from the bottom. She doesn’t have fear when it comes to the water, but she really has no skills either. She will be going once a week for four months.

The neat thing about this place is that it is indoor. It is in a little shopping center literally around the corner from our house. So, I don’t have to sit out in the heat to watch her. Hadley and I are happy about this.

She is currently the only child with her instructor, William. Another child could be added down the road, but she is currently getting the equivalent of private lessons without really paying for them. Yay.

She was ready to go into the pool when it was time. Maybe a little too ready… The entire pool is at least 4 ft deep. There is a ledge around the edge of the pool that is about a foot wide or so. Cady stepped down on the ledge and then right off into the pool and under the water she went. William pulled her up really quickly and she was fine. She cried a little and coughed a little. I knew she was ok, so it was actually quite funny. She got over it quickly and was ready to go.

They started out learning how to kick. William is showing her how to hold her hands.

He held his arm under her wait so she could feel how to hold her body

And off they went across the pool

William helping her get some goggles on. He was so good with her.

And they took another spin across the pool

Then William took out this barbell thing and had her hold on to it while she swam herself across the pool

Then he worked with her on walking herself around the edge of the pool and pulling herself up out of the pool. She did really well. She would pull herself out and then hop back in and swim a little circle back. It was just a small circle and she was mostly just treading water, but she was doing it largely unassisted.

They worked on floating on her back. She was a little resistant at first.

But he got her to relax a bit and she did well. She didn’t float unassisted, but she definitely wasn’t fighting against it.

After she did so well on all the skills they worked on she got to play. They blew bubbles and she had a really good time.

I think it was a very successful first swim lesson and I have no doubt that she is going to learn a lot over this Summer.

Our little crawfish

Hadley is mobile-ish. She doesn’t crawl. She really isn’t anywhere close to crawling. She *can* get up on her hands and knees, but she chooses not to. She would much rather scoot around on her bottom. So in case you don’t get the reference, crawfish swim backward. Hadley scoots backward. It got dubbed The Crawfish because she first started doing it in the bathtub, like a little crawfish.

40 Months

Happy 40 Months Cady Cupcake!

(She is wearing her swimsuit because we were heading out for swim lessons)

Little Miss Independent is becoming more and more independent. Some days it just blows my mind how grown up she is.

I thought we would use car line at school only for rainy days or other reasons like that. Cady has always liked me coming into school and dropping her off and picking her up. Honestly, I like it too. It gives me a chance to just get some quick face time with her teachers and to give her a hug and kiss goodbye. Hugs and kisses goodbye are a big part of our routine when we are leaving each other. But Cady has decided she likes it better. She told me, “Mommy, I like my teacher bringing me to your car.” So we will be doing car line daily until she decides otherwise (or until Hadley starts school there and I have to walk her in).

Cady is really becoming a big help to me around the house. She has always been a good “helper” but sometimes she might have been in the way a little more than she actually helped. But recently she has been very helpful. She entertains Hadley well when I really need to get something done. She loves being able to do things on her own. She does her whole nighttime routine on her own now while Jason or I just supervise. She wouldn’t have it any other way, too.

We love you Cady Cupcake!

As a side note, I have had several people ask me over the last month how long I intend to continue these monthly posts. My answer: as long as she will let me. Currently, she is quite compliant. I ask her to sit for a photo and it is all good. Sometimes I might have to remind her to stop making silly faces, but it is a 5 minute process. If it becomes more than that, I will rethink it. But for now you can count on seeing the monthly posts for the foreseeable future. It forces me to sit and think on how she has changed and grown over a month. I am able to capture little pieces of her personality that I don’t know I would otherwise get to write down and remember.

Summer School

I sent Cady off this morning to the first day of Summer session at Pre-school.

It seems like years ago that she started her very first day of school, but it was just a year ago.

Look at how much she has changed!

(She’s doing “Extra Pretty” Aunt Melissa!)

She is in the Fish class for the third session in a row, so I felt her outfit was quite apropos. Her teacher is also actually the same teacher she had last summer, Ms. Molly. She loved her so much and she was so excited to see her again. She has some of her good friends from the school year in her class too. So it should be a great day for her.

We get to experience a new thing this year since she is in the 3’s, car line. I’m sort of excited about it. I don’t know how often I will use it but I like having the option. I can’t wait to pick her up and hear about her first day of 3’s class.

Memorial Day 2011

We had a fabulous Memorial Day weekend. We traveled up to Branson. We stayed at a great condo with some of my family. All together there are 6 girls ages 9, 6, 4, 3, 2 and 6 months. It is so hard to get all 6 together. I am so glad we did because we had too much fun.

I didn’t take any pics because that’s that I do (or don’t do) when I’m home. Luckily, my fabulous sister-in-law did and she took some awesome pics.

Cady after some serious swimming and an even more serious nap

Hadley had a captive audience much of the weekend. She is so lucky to have such great older cousins to look up to.

What is Memorial Day weekend without some homemade ice cream? Cady was a fan.

Double trouble. Cady and Addi. We are so in trouble.

Grandma wanted a group picture. So we got matching shirts (Thanks Becca!). It wasn’t easy. Here is an outtake

But I think the effort was well worth it

I hope everyone’s Memorial Day was as great as mine and my girl’s
